BHS plows over Wingfield for homecoming victory
The Brookhaven High School Panthers pulled out all the stops and picked up an easy victory over the visiting Wingfield Falcons 35-21 Friday night on King Field.
With the added pressures of homecoming looming over the players, the Panthers showed no sign of nerves or jitters as they were able to control the game and field position battle for most of the night.
Wingfield — winless this season — came to play and surprised the Panthers early by striking first with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Williams to give the Falcons an early 7-0 lead.
Soon after that score BHS made quick work of its offensive series by moving quickly down the field and clinching a touchdown with a 12-yard pass from Sevante Quinn to wide receiver John Hilbert to tie the game at 7-7.
“We were hungry for a victory tonight, we lost last week and needed to come back tonight with a win and see our offense really dominate,” said Hilbert. “We need to execute every play heading into South Jones next week and we need to play them like we played homecoming tonight.”
Leading 14-7 before halftime, the Panthers got on the board again with a 40-yard punt return from Byrion Robinson that grew the lead to 21-7.
After deferring to the second half and coming out on offense the Panthers struck quickly again with another march down the field. The drive culminated when Gabriel Burnett scored on a power-dive from 20-yards out to put Brookhaven up 28-7.
The easy scores led Brookhaven head coach Tucker Peavey to sub in his younger players for the remainder of the game after Quinn gave the Panthers their final score of the night. The second string ended up allowing two touchdowns late in the game.
“We played very well tonight and can always do things a little better but are very happy to see some of our younger kids play at the end of the game,” said Peavey. “The defense needs to handle business a little better, but I think starting from that second series tonight they played a great game as well.”
BHS travels to Ellisville next week to take on the South Jones Braves.
