MSDH reports 1 new COVID death in Lincoln County

One new coronavirus-related death was reported for Lincoln County Wednesday by the Mississippi State Department of Health, and 13 new positive test results.

The county now has 1,368 reported cases and 56 reported deaths.

Of the 21 new deaths reported statewide, 12 were from Aug. 11-Oct. 19 and nine were identified from death certificate reports Aug. 19-Oct. 14.

There were 801 new cases recorded statewide, upping totals to 112,123 cases — 99,919 confirmed and 12,204 probable — and 3,223 deaths — 2,919 confirmed and 304 probable. Confirmed cases and deaths are generally determined by positive PCR tests, which detect the presence of ongoing coronavirus infection.

Probable cases are those who test positive by other testing methods such as antibody or antigen, and have recent symptoms consistent with COVID-19, indicating a recent infection.

Probable deaths are those individuals with a designation of COVID-19 as a cause of death on the death certificate, but where no confirmatory testing was performed.

In Mississippi, 97,675 persons are presumed recovered.

In Lincoln County, 344 cases were among Black people, 744 among white people, one among Native Americans and 84 of unknown race and ethnicity.

Across the nation, more than 8.3 million cases of the novel virus have been reported, and more than 221,000 people have died as a result of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The states with the largest number of cases are California and Texas, each with more than 875,000, and Florida, with more than 760,000 cases. The greatest number of deaths have occurred in New York — just over 33,000 from more than 492,000 cases — Texas, with more than 17,700 deaths, and California, with more than 17,100 deaths.

Worldwide, more than 40.9 million people have contracted the virus, more than 1.13 million have died and approximately 28 million have recovered.
